Ralph A. Brewer Award
Criteria for selecting the Ralph A. Brewer Award:
The recipient must have been a full-time student, faculty member, or member of the staff at the Tennessee School for the Blind for at least two years.
If the recipient was a student, then one of the following must apply to the winner:
He/She, has gone on to distinguish himself or herself in a chosen field, and in doing so he brought a sense of pride to all of the Alumni of T.S.B.
While a student at T.S.B. the recipient distinguished him or herself in athletics, music, or Scholarship, bringing honor to the school and has contributed substantially to the success of the Alumni Association for the Tennessee School for the Blind by unselfishly giving of his or her time, skills in leadership, financial contributions or a combination of all three.
In the case of a member of the faculty:
He/She has given of his or herself beyond the call of duty with regard to the affection for students, skill. In teaching, and devotion to the idea that students could live productive lives. The nominee should have distinguished him or herself in the national or state arena bringing a sense of pride to all who were associated with the recipient, and particularly the members of the Alumni Association.
In the case of a member of the staff:
The Nominee should have given to the students the best he or she could possibly give; love, being a parent away from home, advise about life’s lessons, and for being an outstanding role model for students at the School.
This award must be given to a person who is living at the time of the selection. Should a recipient die following his or her selection, the award will be made to his or her next of kin. A recipient will be eligible only once in a lifetime to receive the award.
In addition to the monetary award, a suitable plaque or metal or memento shall be presented to the winner to permanently honor the recipient. A person considered for the award that is a member of a board, committee, and body having the duty to deliberate with regard to the selection of the winner, then that person shall be asked to stand aside and not participate in any way in the deliberation.
